Today’s cereal video started with a fan request. And then we visited a Walmart in Virginia on our way home from a wedding and found a Limited Edition cereal to compare it to.

Apple Cinnamon Cheerios are a General Mills whole grain oat cereal. They taste like Cheerios always taste, but with a delicious cinnamon coating. The apple isn’t very noticeable, but the cereal is very tasty. Also, thanks to Kung Fu Panda 2, there was a toy inside the box. If NYCWD had been in the room the cereal would have received 5 bowls for that alone. Apple Cinnamon Cheerios also gets pluses for a good box and bag opening, a perfect sog, and real apple puree in its ingredients. Deductions are for having wheat but not listing it as an allergen and being high in sugars while being low on fiber and protein.

<img src="http://www.cerealwednesday.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Pebbles-Boulders.jpg" alt="" title="Pebbles Boulders" width="264" height="343" align="right" size-full wp-image-2167" /> Post Pebbles Boulders are listed as being Stone Age Caramel Apple flavor. It smells like apple, it kinda tastes like apple, but it definitely tastes like sticky caramel sugar that will rot your teeth before you can even finish grabbing for your toothbrush. Its nutrition information is pretty comparable to Apple Cinnamon Cheerios but boasts whole grain corn flour as well as whole grain oat flour. Kudos to Post for listing wheat so those allergic will quickly be able to see they should stay away from this one. Too bad the taste knocked out any positive. I feel generous in the number of bowls I gave this cereal. Despite its claim to having less sugar than Honey Nut Cheerios, it tastes like a big bowl of sweet yucky. Also, what’s up with the bones? I know it’s a Flintstones based cereal, but I don’t eat bones. Ew. Dude.

Apple Cinnamon Cheerios

Taste: Deliciously cinnamon oat goodness
Box opening: Good
Bag rippage: A little tough to get in the bag but it didn’t rip
Bag slippage: None, and a toy came flying out! Bonus!
Sog factor: Unsoggy
Allergy alert: No listed allergens, but there’s wheat in there

Pebbles Boulders Stone Age Caramel Apple

Taste: Like apple, but with a really strange and sweet tang
Box opening: A little rip.
Bag rippage: Tough
Bag slippage: No slip
Sog factor: Unsoggy
Allergy alert: Wheat is listed as its ownly “Contains” ingredient

Post Alpha-Bits is a sweetened oat and corn cereal with 11 essential vitamins and mineralss and the building blocks for healthy brain development.

And it’s educational. Each morsel of cereal is a letter of the alphabet, so you can spell words to your heart’s content! Especially since it takes a very long time for the cereal to sog into mooshy mush.

Since Post Alpha-Bits has been around the block a few times and then some, we’ll go old school with the write-up and give you some history. Alpha-Bits first arrived to the cereal shelves in 1958, but lost its way into our spoons in 2006 when we were on a “no more sugary cereals for kids!” kick. In an effort to conform to the change in consumer taste Post introduced sugar-free Alpha-Bits in 2008, but later the same year returned in its original form with all the yummy sugar a kid (and a kid at heart) could ever want.

And here is the main attraction of our Cereal Wednesday drive-in double feature which Poppy carelessly edits to give you dead air at the start. At least you get to stare at NYCWD. We know you wanna.

The cereal has such a short shelf life that Post doesn’t even bother to add its nutrition information to their site, but the smurfs are crawling all over the Post site and when you click them you get brought to the Sony movie site. Because when I’m trying to find cereal information I want to be brought to a movie site that has absolutely no information about cereal whatsoever.

:-/

But, I digress! Let’s talk about taste. The Smurfs Cereal tastes like Fruity Pebbles on sugar steroids. It’s delicious! And the white flakes tame the sugariness of the blue flakes ever so slightly so that your mouth can only be pleased by the sugar shock within it.

Somehow this sweetened rice cereal doesn’t sog out in the normal amount of time it takes to eat a bowl, but… if you do let it sog out you get blue milk!

Yippy!

Just the smurftastic nutrition facts, Ma’am:

The Smurfs Cereal is low on fat and protein, decent on vitamins and minerals, high on carbs, super sugary… Yup, a kids cereal!

If you love Fruity Pebbles and you can find this cereal on your store shelf, buy a box of The Smurfs Cereal and enjoy.

And, just to emphasize one more time: Painter Smurf is from a Happy Meal, not from the cereal box.

Taste: Fruity Pebbles
Box opening: No trouble
Bag rippage: No rips!
Bag slippage: None
Sog factor: It sogged out nicely, oddly enough.
Milk factor:The milk did eventually turn blue. It just took 15 minutes. YAR!
Allergy alert: No allergens listed

Somehow this sweetened rice cereal doesn't sog out in the normal amount of time it takes to eat a bowl, but... if you do let it sog out you get blue milk!

Yippy!

Just the smurftastic nutrition facts, Ma'am:

The Smurfs Cereal is low on fat and protein, decent on vitamins and minerals, high on carbs, super sugary... Yup, a kids cereal!

Post Marshmallow Pebbles is a new flavor in the Pebbles line. It is officially suffixed With Vanilla-Graham Flavors on its website, although not on the box itself. It is a rice, wheat, oat, and corn based pellet dyed with Yellow 5 to make it look appealing to its customer. I didn’t want to say this in front of my parents, but I’ll say it in front of the entire Internet: The Pebbles pellets look like pee. Very unappetizing. And slightly ironic since I just reviewed boogers on poop two weeks ago!

There are approximately 40 billion marshmallows in a bowl of Marshmallow Pebbles. I might be hyperbolizing slightly, but I’ve never seen a cereal rely so heavily on its marshmallow quantity to make it taste like anything good. The marshmallows are sweet tasting just like in any of its marshmallow competitor products. Mom thought it tasted like a Marshmallow Krispies Treat in the first bite, but beyond that she swayed to my side – those yellow Pebbles taste like absolutely nothing. They taste like void. It’s very odd.

Here’s the nutrition breakdown:

Ok, fine, they didn’t lie about the Excellent Source of Vitamin D since 3/4 cup of Marshmallow Pebbles has 5% less Vitamin D than 1 cup of milk!

Note to vegetarians and vegans: There is gelatin listed in the marshmallow ingredients and it doesn’t say it’s vegetable gelatin so we must presume it’s gelatin from animal and therefore not free of animal product.

Thanks so much to Mom and Stepdad for playing along! And thanks to NYCWD for making his presence known by phone.

Yes, I do realize that I forgot to angle the camera at my HEAD. Won’t make that mistake again, but isn’t it fun to watch my stormtrooper PEW-PEW shirt instead?!

Post Cinna-Graham Honeycomb is a new flavor of the original Honeycomb. During filming I said that Cinna-Graham Honeycomb tastes similar to Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but I realized when trying to sum up the taste in writing that it actually tastes like a Honey Maid Cinnamon graham cracker, which is an AMAZING snack, if you’ve never had it. The cinnamon on the cracker is strong and powerful, just like in this cereal. If you like the taste of CINNAMON that tastes fresh from the stick, this is going to make your tongue happy.

The shape of the cereal itself is a honeycomb so the milk gets to go through and saturate all of its sides, but magically the cereal doesn’t sog out. Gotta blame the oat and corn combination for that.

And now, your favorite part, the nutrition facts:

Anybody else notice something different from what I said in the video, which I specifically noted was interesting, but is different from the nutrition information on the Post site? SERVING SIZE! According to Post‘s website the serving size is 3/4 (three-quarters) cup for 32 grams, but as I mentioned in the video, which was NOT my mistake, the box says 32 grams is 1 1/2 (one and a half) cups! Proof is in the picture, my friends:

That’s from the side of the box I reviewed during the video. I have written to Post to let them know about the discrepancy. I did a little investigating:

…and have concluded that since Post Honeycomb‘s serving size is 1 1/2 (one and a half) cups for 32 grams that the Cinna-Graham‘s correct serving size is also 1 1/2 (one and a half) cups at 32 grams.

Nutrition isn’t stellar on this, but the box finally boasts on the one panel I didn’t check during filming that it has 16 grams of whole grains per serving. I know I read the carb count to you, but I didn’t put two and two specifically together until the box told me: FOUR!

Still a bowl deduction for lack of fiber and protein (I know, I know) as well as a bowl deduction for the cereal’s flavor completely falling into the bowl after only a few minutes.

Taste: Like a Honey Maid cinnamon graham cracker!
Box opening: Good
Bag rippage: None, although a bit hard to open
Bag slippage: None
Sog factor: Stayed crunchy, although all the cinnamon fell off the comb
Allergy alert: Manufactured on equipment that processes wheat

During filming I said that Cinna-Graham Honeycomb tastes similar to Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but I realized when trying to sum up the taste in writing that it actually tastes like a Honey Maid Cinnamon graham cracker, which is an AMAZING snack, if you've never had it. The cinnamon on the cracker is strong and powerful, just like in this cereal. If you like the taste of CINNAMON that tastes fresh from the stick, this is going to make your tongue happy.

The shape of the cereal itself is a honeycomb so the milk gets to go through and saturate all of its sides, but magically the cereal doesn't sog out. Gotta blame the oat and corn combination for that.

And now, your favorite part, the nutrition facts:

Anybody else notice something different from what I said in the video, which I specifically noted was interesting, but is different from the nutrition information on the Post site? SERVING SIZE! According to Post's website the serving size is 3/4 (three-quarters) cup for 32 grams, but as I mentioned in the video, which was NOT my mistake, the box says 32 grams is 1 1/2 (one and a half) cups! Proof is in the picture, my friends:

That's from the side of the box I reviewed during the video. I have written to Post to let them know about the discrepancy. :) I did a little investigating:

...and have concluded that since Post Honeycomb's serving size is 1 1/2 (one and a half) cups for 32 grams that the Cinna-Graham's correct serving size is also 1 1/2 (one and a half) cups at 32 grams.

Nutrition isn't stellar on this, but the box finally boasts on the one panel I didn't check during filming that it has 16 grams of whole grains per serving. I know I read the carb count to you, but I didn't put two and two specifically together until the box told me: FOUR!

Still a bowl deduction for lack of fiber and protein (I know, I know) as well as a bowl deduction for the cereal's flavor completely falling into the bowl after only a few minutes.

Taste: Like a Honey Maid cinnamon graham cracker!
Box opening: Good
Bag rippage: None, although a bit hard to open
Bag slippage: None
Sog factor: Stayed crunchy, although all the cinnamon fell off the comb :(
Allergy alert: Manufactured on equipment that processes wheat

Welcome to Wednesday! Today’s cereal is definitely kid-friendly. But is it Poppy-friendly?

Post Cupcake Pebbles is a new flavor on the market and boasts of being the first cupcake cereal ever. It smells like very delicious vanilla frosting and its rice flakes have brightly colored sparkles. Unfortunately, its flavor is sickeningly sweet and it sogs out in a very peculiar way, like you’re eating super thin slices of radish. Who wants to think they’re eating radishes when they’re supposed to be eating cereal? (Poppy is not raising her hand…)

And now, the nutrition facts:

This rice-based cereal does have some added vitamins and minerals to make it slightly healthy for you, so there’s a whole bowl for you right there. It focuses specifically on its 25% RDA of Vitamin D. The problem as I see it is that it’s missing its dietary fiber and its whole grains. Also, would it hurt to throw a few more grams of protein in there? I know, I know, this is a typical scenario for this genre of sugary cereals, I just wish I could eat my cupcake and have it too.

Post gets props for the party in a box concept. You can make a cake with the Cupcake Pebbles using a recipe on the side, then there are placecards and a Pin the Tail on the Dino game on the back. Also, the front of the box itself would make a great addition to the party, it’s so vibrantly colorful.

Cupcake Pebbles unfortunately loses points for texture, overly sweet taste, and bag rippage.

Taste: Unfortunately not like its vanilla-frosted cupcake scent, and waaaay too sweet.
Box opening: Easy
Bag rippage: Split down the side
Bag slippage: It should have slipped but it got lucky
Sog factor: Sogged out in a very unpleasant way
Allergy alert: No allergens! And it’s gluten-free, probably by accident.

Named after its unique shape, Post Honeycomb is a semi-sweet whole grain corn and oat cereal that stays true to its name by containing real honey. Out of the box and after a soak the combs themselves aren’t particularly sweet tasting, but if you eat them in milk really quickly you’ll taste that golden honey goodness packed into every comb. Once the sweetness leaves the comb it tastes pretty much exactly like Cheerios. I love Cheerios! (Then again, how can I not? I’m English-American.) NYCWD doesn’t care for Cheerios. In either case, a sweetened cereal really has no business tasting like an imitation of another cereal, especially one that isn’t sweet tasting.

Post Honeycomb is part of the Kraft Sensible Solution program, offering an excellent source of whole grain and 10 vitamins and minerals. Its per 1.5 cup serving contains 130 calories, 1 gram of fat, 28 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of dietary fiber, and 2 grams of protein. It offers 15% recommended daily value of Vitamin A and Iron, and 25% of Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, and Vitamin B12. It should be noted that while these numbers may seem typical of most cereals, the serving size is not. Post Honeycomb offers a serving size of 1.5 cups compared to the typical 1 cup or 3/4 cup serving size of most other cereals. This does give added value by providing the eater with a sense of a fuller meal at the same proportional nutritional value as other cereals that would give a less fulfilling experience.

Honeycomb sadly has no toys but it does offer Postokens redeemable at a Webkinz-like world at Postopia.com. Kids play with virtual toys these days anyway, so maybe Post knows what they’re doing! Stay tuned for a complete exposé of Postopia, written by NYCWD himself!

Kids play with virtual toys these days anyway, so maybe Post knows what they're doing! Stay tuned for a complete exposé of Postopia, written by NYCWD himself!

Special Mascot Correction Announcement: The mascot is not actually a bear as originally reported by NYCWD in this week's episode. It is, in fact, a rodentesque "thing" that the most reliable source on the internet refers to as a chupacabra. Best mascot ever!!!

Taste: Like Cheerios! Which would be fine if they were Cheerios...

Shredded Wheat with Real Strawberries is part of the Sensible Solution program. It’s big on fiber, whole grain, and protein but low on vitamins and minerals. Breaking down the numbers, there are 6 grams of fiber, 46 grams of total whole grain, and 5 grams of protein per 1-1/4 cup serving. The cereal offers 10% of daily recommended amounts of Thiamin, Niacin, and Zinc and 15% of Magnesium, but all other vitamins and minerals are less than 10% or not in the cereal at all. Don’t forget to take your big kid vitamin with this.

If you’re a fan of shredded wheat and strawberries you will enjoy this cereal. If you’ve never tried shredded wheat before I offer you the analogy of little woven pillows of wheat that sit quite heavily in your tummy but taste pretty yummy going down. Make sure to use lots of milk because a dry biscuit is a tough-to-swallow biscuit. But, too much milk and this cereal will turn into a bowl of paste as heavy as a small boulder, so play with your milk ratios a bit to find your perfect balance.

Taste: Severe berry goodness
Box opening: A little difficult
Bag rippage: No ripping
Bag slippage: Minimal slipping
Allergy alert: Contains wheat ingredients
