This week it’s Seitenbacher Kakao-Düsis, a turbine shaped cocoa cereal that smells really horrible and tastes equally so. That taste? It’s spelt, which Poppy can’t be bothered to remember from week to week, but thanks to wikipedia for the definition:

Spelt (Triticum spelta) is a hexaploid species of wheat. Spelt was an important staple in parts of Europe from the Bronze Age to medieval times; it now survives as a relict crop in Central Europe and northern Spain and has found a new market as a health food.

Seitenbacher is famous for its Müsli cereals, sold as health conscious and natural. Too bad their Kakao-Düsis smells like dog food… and tastes even worse. We might recall by now that Poppy loves healthy cereals in general, but not this one. Dog biscuits taste better. DOG BISCUITS TASTE BETTER, PEOPLE.

Nutrition information is as follows per 30 gram serving: 108 calories, 3 grams protein, 22 grams Total Carbohydrates, 3 grams Fruit Sugar, 0.9 grams Total Fat, 0 milligrams Cholesterol, 3 grams Dietary Fiber, and 2 milligrams Sodium. Ingredients: spelt, fruit sugar, and de-oiled cocoa.

Congratulations for being “100% spelt” (presumably, as in, no other grain was used in the making of this product), high in fiber, and containing real fruit sugar, but your cereal is so inedible that Poppy refused to eat a second bite.

The only bowl given is for the shape of the cereal — turbine!

Taste: Dog food
Box opening: No box, just a bag
Bag rippage: No rip, but I used scissors
Bag slippage: None
Sog factor: It sogged out on the edges only, the center remained crunchy, but no one wants to eat it either way
It’s Kölln Zuberfleks Honig! The rough translation on that one is Honey Flavored Magic “Fleks”, which happen to be a flower shaped corn and oat nugget that tastes similar to Cap’n Crunch but with a lot less sugar.

As our friend Creature explains, Kölln Zuberfleks Honig is a cereal based on an educational kids show called “Die Sendung mit der Maus” (“The Show with the Mouse”) which follows the daily life adventures of a mouse and his elephant friend, and has been on television for over 40 years.

There is a mouse mask cut-out on the back of the box which kids cut out to wear on “smart excursions of discovery”.

NYCWD is freaked out by this mouse mask, but Poppy finds it charming.

And now for some nutrition information! Per 30 gram serving there are: 167 calories, 5 grams protein, 29 grams of total carbohydrates, 12 grams sugar, 3 grams fat, 4 mg cholesterol, allllmost 1 gram of fiber, 150 mg sodium, 20% daily phosphorus, and 9% daily magnesium.

The ingredients list is super short, so let’s list them all! Corn flour, oat flour, sugar, wheat starch, glucose syrup, honey, unhydrogenated vegetable fat, iodized salt, soy lecithin, and carotene for color.

Poppy deducted a bowl for the low nutritional value, while NYCWD deducted for the mask on the back, because he can.

Taste: A less sweet Cap’n Crunch
But, surprise! It’s actually pretty healthy for you!

Fruity Waffle Cereal is low in fat, high in fiber, a decent source of vitamins and minerals, and packed with natural fruit goodness. Unfortunately, its first two ingredients are sugar and the not-really-awesome carbohydrate corn meal. BUT there’s no high fructose corn syrup and the ingredient list does go on to mention whole grain oat flour and wheat!

Hannaford kind of forgot to add the nutrition information for this product to their site (there’s a nutrition panel there but all the values are blank) so I scanned my cereal box to show you:

<img src="http://www.cerealwednesday.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/nutritionpanel-182x1024.jpg" alt="" title="Fruity Waffle Cereal nutrition information" width="182" height="1024" size-large wp-image-1747" />

Bag slippage, neglecting to mention soy as an allergen*, and a low protein count are in Fruity Waffle Cereal‘s minus column. Also, corn meal as the main carbohydrate to hold the cereal together doesn’t thrill me. The plusses of it tasting like Froot Loops without sogging out and having really great fiber, low sugar, and good vitamin and mineral amounts while using natural fruit flavors AND having the cutest mascot ever totally outweigh the minuses. Also, where I bought this cereal it was only $1.99 (everyday price!) for a 12 ounce box.

*I contacted Hannaford about this oversight, have yet to hear back.

Taste: Almost exactly like Froot Loops!
Box opening: Fine
Bag rippage: A tiny bit hard
Bag slippage: *kerplunk*
Sog factor: Perfect sog, not too little and not too much
Allergy alert: Contains wheat and soy

Fruity Waffle Cereal is a Hannaford store brand cereal that looks like candied mini-waffle and tastes almost exactly like Froot Loops. But, surprise! It's actually pretty healthy for you!

Fruity Waffle Cereal is low in fat, high in fiber, a decent source of vitamins and minerals, and packed with natural fruit goodness. Unfortunately, its first two ingredients are sugar and the not-really-awesome carbohydrate corn meal. BUT there's no high fructose corn syrup and the ingredient list does go on to mention whole grain oat flour and wheat!

Hannaford kind of forgot to add the nutrition information for this product to their site (there's a nutrition panel there but all the values are blank) so I scanned my cereal box to show you:</itunes:summary>
