Cinnamon Chex is a gluten-free rice based cereal from General Mills. It contains both traditional Rice Chex and cinnamon coated Rice Chex to balance out the cinnamon flavor. The cereal packs a serious real cinnamon punch without being overly sweet from added sugars.

Nutrition details for Cinnamon Chex are pretty decent:

Not enough fiber for my taste, and it annoys me to no end that this product that’s safe for those who are gluten intolerant isn’t also safe for those who are peanut or lactose intolerant. I won’t comment on my take of why we have so many allergies these days since I have no scientific data to back it up, but it definitely does occur that someone who needs a gluten-free diet also needs a peanut-free or lactose-free diet.

Both NYCWD and I like Rice Chex very much, so it’d be tough for rice-based Cinnamon Chex to not be highly rated. I deducted for lack of fiber and the allergens. NYCWD can stick his “whatever” where the sun don’t shine, because the fact remains that the cereal deserves its deduction.

Honey Nut Chex is a gluten free cereal offered to us by General Mills. Its honey flavor is from actual honey, while the nut portion is from natural almond flavor rather than almond slivers directly in the cereal. The Chex is a perforated pillow of corn, perfect for letting the milk sink in to activate the sweetness. The honey flavor is very prominent while the almond flavor… uh, there’s almond in there? Yah, not so noticeable.

The cereal was a so-so sog for NYCWD but for me it tasted like I had tablecloth material in my mouth, coated in a bunch of sugar.

How about the nutrition? Let’s take a look:

The carbs in Honey Nut Chex are from corn meal and whole grain corn. If the corn meal is purely corn then this is how the product is gluten free, meaning it is free from wheat, barley, rye, malts and triticale or added to the ingredients under the guise of “maltodextrine”, “dextrine”, and “dextrose”. Low on fiber and protein, decent on vitamins and minerals, and this is our gluten-free friend’s favorite cereal so it must actually be gluten free or she’d complain a lot more often that her tummy hurts.

Taste: Tastes like honey
Box opening: Easy
Bag rippage: None, but HARD to open
Bag slippage: Not glued in
Sog factor: The sog made the squares taste like tablecloth
Allergy alert: Contains almond

The truth is that it is a very bland cereal. I enjoy a great number of corn based cereals, but definitely not this one. The only possible light at the end of the tunnel is that since it is corn based, we can only hope that they are getting their corn from American farmers.

While I know it is a healthier option, and that hopefully buying it means your buying American, I will leave it for the true corn lovers out there to indulge themselves further.

What I do find interesting was a recent development. While we had named Post Cereal as the first corporate victim to the anti-cereal marketing movement, The Breakfast Bowl found an article this past week that suggests that Ralston Corp may be looking to buy Post Cereal from Kraft Foods. This news is intriguing because it was Ralston Corp, then known as Ralston Purina, that sold the Chex Brand to General Mills in 1997. In fact, the actual Chex shape is based on the former Ralston Purina logo of a checkered board.

The fact Ralston Purina is who created Corn Chex does not surprise me… considering it does taste a bit like dog food.

There is absolutely no doubt about it… I LOVE Rice Chex cereal. I don’t know where my love of it comes from, nor what exactly it is that makes it so attractive to me. They practically NEVER have toys in them, but by not putting them in there at least they don’t disappoint. It isn’t because it is a healthy choice, since we all know I’m not the healthiest eater. I just like it. Deal.

Rice Chex really does not have that storied a history. It is part of the Chex family of cereals made by General Mills which includes Corn Chex and Wheat Chex. It is also an integral part of the popular Chex Party Mix. Personally, I prefer my own demented version of it:

NYCWD’s Chex Mix

8 cups of Rice

1 cup of chocolate chips

1/2 cup of smooth/creamy peanut butter

1/4 cup (usually 1/2 a stick) of baking butter butter (with Canola oil)

1 teaspoon of vanilla

1 cup of powdered sugar (optional)

In a small saucepan over low heat, melt chocolate chips, peanut butter, and baking butter until smooth and creamy and be sure to stir it often. Take it off the stove and then stir in the vanilla. Pour the mixture over the cereal in a big bowl. Mix it all up. Place the mix and sugar in a plastic food baggie and shake it like a Polaroid picture. Pour the mix out onto waxed paper and let it cool before eating. Don’t want to eat it all in one sitting? Store it in an air tight tupperware container and it’ll usually hold for about 5 days or so.
