Cinnamon Chex is a gluten-free rice based cereal from General Mills. It contains both traditional Rice Chex and cinnamon coated Rice Chex to balance out the cinnamon flavor. The cereal packs a serious real cinnamon punch without being overly sweet from added sugars.

Nutrition details for Cinnamon Chex are pretty decent:

Not enough fiber for my taste, and it annoys me to no end that this product that’s safe for those who are gluten intolerant isn’t also safe for those who are peanut or lactose intolerant. I won’t comment on my take of why we have so many allergies these days since I have no scientific data to back it up, but it definitely does occur that someone who needs a gluten-free diet also needs a peanut-free or lactose-free diet.

Both NYCWD and I like Rice Chex very much, so it’d be tough for rice-based Cinnamon Chex to not be highly rated. I deducted for lack of fiber and the allergens. NYCWD can stick his “whatever” where the sun don’t shine, because the fact remains that the cereal deserves its deduction.

Honey Nut Chex is a gluten free cereal offered to us by General Mills. Its honey flavor is from actual honey, while the nut portion is from natural almond flavor rather than almond slivers directly in the cereal. The Chex is a perforated pillow of corn, perfect for letting the milk sink in to activate the sweetness. The honey flavor is very prominent while the almond flavor… uh, there’s almond in there? Yah, not so noticeable.

The cereal was a so-so sog for NYCWD but for me it tasted like I had tablecloth material in my mouth, coated in a bunch of sugar.

How about the nutrition? Let’s take a look:

The carbs in Honey Nut Chex are from corn meal and whole grain corn. If the corn meal is purely corn then this is how the product is gluten free, meaning it is free from wheat, barley, rye, malts and triticale or added to the ingredients under the guise of “maltodextrine”, “dextrine”, and “dextrose”. Low on fiber and protein, decent on vitamins and minerals, and this is our gluten-free friend’s favorite cereal so it must actually be gluten free or she’d complain a lot more often that her tummy hurts.

…hosts, that is. That’s right, this week NYCWD is back for a quick CW with me, after months of recuperating from the 4-year-old Christmas Crunch cereal purchased off eBay. (Juuuuuust kidding, it was the Honey Smacks that did him in! )

Strawberry Chex is a brand new flavor distributed by General Mills. The cereal is rice- and corn-based, with half of the Chex being plain Rice Chex and Corn Chex (although we really only tasted the Rice Chex), and the other half being both types of Chex with powdery strawberry coating. The strawberry is really quite inconsistent depending on your bite — if you get a bite with a bunch of plain Chex you don’t even know you’re eating the Strawberry Chex. What’s the point of the light flavor? It’s a strawberry cereal, make it taste like it is! But the milk? Mmmmmm, very strawberry!!!

In one 3/4 cup serving Strawberry Chex has 130 calories, 2 grams of fat, 26 carbohydrates — only 8 of which are sugar, 2 grams of protein, and a bunch of your favorite vitamins and minerals: 25% of Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin B12; 30% Zinc; and 50% Iron and Folic Acid. BHT is added to preserve freshness – yum!

Slogan: “Oven Toasted Rice & Corn Cereal with the deliciously light taste of strawberries”
Taste: It tastes like Rice Chex (NYCWD‘s favorite cereal!), but with pockets of strawberry-flavored Chex. A very bipolar cereal taste-wise. I think it’d be smarter if they made all the Chex taste like strawberry.

A one bowl deduction for General Mills not making the right decision to coat all the pieces in strawberry goodness.

While chocolate has been considered a divine treat through the ages, never has it been considered a viable breakfast option… until now. Chocolate Chex Cereal surpasses all expectations with its baked on cocoa powder. The burst of flavor is reminiscent of the flavoring of a hot chocolate on a cold day.

Besides the nostalgia of a cold winter day, Chocolate Chex Cereal provides a sweetened cereal with only 8 grams of sugar. Compared to Froot Loops 15 grams of sugar and Crunchberries 12 grams of sugar, Chocolate Chex is the clear cut winner in the battle to keep the grams down. This is proof that sweetened cereals CAN use less sugar, and be just as enticing.

The only thing stopping Chocolate Chex from conquering the breakfast tables of the chocolate lovers of America is its limited availability. General Mills has a winner on their hands, lets hope they realize it and distribute it along wider channels.
