Aaaaaaand, we’re back after a small Spring Cleaning of the Cereal Wednesday abode! It’s so *clean* in here!

Quaker Oats again delivers yet another Cap’n cereal, this time in the form of Chocolatey Crunch. It’s just like the original Cap’n Crunch but with real cocoa. Unfortunately, that cocoa is really dull, really mediocre, really uninspiring, except in the milk where it takes on a nice chocolate milk flavor.

Chocolatey Crunch does have seven essential vitamins and minerals at 30% or higher. Low in protein and fiber never bodes well, and Chocolatey Crunch suffers this fate. Also, there are a lot of artificial coloring dyes and there is BHT to preserve freshness, which your common sense gut tells you are just not great for you. The rest of the nutrition facts are as follows:

Not enough to make Poppy happy with this one.

The box does offer a word search, but that’s not enough of a draw to increase my overall enjoyment of this boring cereal.

Taste: Like regular Cap’n Crunch in a lackluster cocoa coating
Box opening: Not hard
Bag rippage: None
Bag slippage: *zoop*

I think it’s part of the universe’s running joke to make our videos have at least some sort of quirk.

Today, the Weetabix video I tried to record for you said it fully recorded, but when I clicked Done it said there was no video. And since I only had one box of Weetabix and the one take was done, I took it as 2012′s sign to move on to the next one, so today you get Cap’n Crunch’s Oops! All Berries instead!!!

Quaker Oats lovingly gives us Cap’n Crunch’s Oops! All Berries, which is just like Cap’n Crunch’s Crunchberries but without the golden biscuits that cut up the roof of your mouth! Oops! All Berries is a bowl of colorful balls — pinkish red, green, blue, and purple — that has a starting sweet taste with a salty ending.

Oops! All Berries is not big on protein or fiber, there’s a lot of sodium per serving, and the carbs in it aren’t the wonderful kind, but it does have some pretty substantial minerals, with a few B vitamins thrown in for good luck. The rest of the nutrition facts are as follows:

This product does not specifically say it contains any allergens, but those sensitive to gluten should be careful of the corn and oat flours which could carry some gluten if processed in a glutenous location, and if you’re hypersensitive to food coloring please take note that there’s a lot of color added via food dye.

I love that Oops! All Berries offers us grown-ups a retro Cap’n Crunch t-shirt and an 80s flashback puzzle. Also, not mentioned during the video, is an ad for their newest Cap’n Crunch flavor, which is on our cereal shelf, so expect to see it soon!

Taste: Yummy sweetness with a salty chaser
Box opening: Not difficult
Bag rippage: A little tough
Bag slippage: Total, and the cereal didn’t even want to come out
Sog factor: Perfect dog
Allergy alert: None listed, but be careful

Happy New Year, cereal fans!

I think it's part of the universe's running joke to make our videos have at least some sort of quirk.

Today, the Weetabix video I tried to record for you said it fully recorded, but when I clicked Done it said there was no video. And since I only had one box of Weetabix and the one take was done, I took it as 2012's sign to move on to the next one, so today you get Cap'n Crunch's Oops! All Berries instead!!!

Quaker Oats lovingly gives us Cap'n Crunch's Oops! All Berries, which is just like Cap'n Crunch's Crunchberries but without the golden biscuits that cut up the roof of your mouth! Oops! All Berries is a bowl of colorful balls -- pinkish red, green, blue, and purple -- that has a starting sweet taste with a salty ending.

Oops! All Berries is not big on protein or fiber, there's a lot of sodium per serving, and the carbs in it aren't the wonderful kind, but it does have some pretty substantial minerals, with a few B vitamins thrown in for good luck. The rest of the nutrition facts are as follows:

This product does not specifically say it contains any allergens, but those sensitive to gluten should be careful of the corn and oat flours which could carry some gluten if processed in a glutenous location, and if you're hypersensitive to food coloring please take note that there's a lot of color added via food dye.

I love that Oops! All Berries offers us grown-ups a retro Cap'n Crunch t-shirt and an 80s flashback puzzle. Also, not mentioned during the video, is an ad for their newest Cap'n Crunch flavor, which is on our cereal shelf, so expect to see it soon!

Taste: Yummy sweetness with a salty chaser
Box opening: Not difficult
Bag rippage: A little tough
Bag slippage: Total, and the cereal didn't even want to come out
Sog factor: Perfect dog
Allergy alert: None listed, but be careful

This week it’s Seitenbacher Kakao-Düsis, a turbine shaped cocoa cereal that smells really horrible and tastes equally so. That taste? It’s spelt, which Poppy can’t be bothered to remember from week to week, but thanks to wikipedia for the definition:

Spelt (Triticum spelta) is a hexaploid species of wheat. Spelt was an important staple in parts of Europe from the Bronze Age to medieval times; it now survives as a relict crop in Central Europe and northern Spain and has found a new market as a health food.

Seitenbacher is famous for its Müsli cereals, sold as health conscious and natural. Too bad their Kakao-Düsis smells like dog food… and tastes even worse. We might recall by now that Poppy loves healthy cereals in general, but not this one. Dog biscuits taste better. DOG BISCUITS TASTE BETTER, PEOPLE.

Nutrition information is as follows per 30 gram serving: 108 calories, 3 grams protein, 22 grams Total Carbohydrates, 3 grams Fruit Sugar, 0.9 grams Total Fat, 0 milligrams Cholesterol, 3 grams Dietary Fiber, and 2 milligrams Sodium. Ingredients: spelt, fruit sugar, and de-oiled cocoa.

Congratulations for being “100% spelt” (presumably, as in, no other grain was used in the making of this product), high in fiber, and containing real fruit sugar, but your cereal is so inedible that Poppy refused to eat a second bite.

The only bowl given is for the shape of the cereal — turbine!

Taste: Dog food
Box opening: No box, just a bag
Bag rippage: No rip, but I used scissors
Bag slippage: None
Sog factor: It sogged out on the edges only, the center remained crunchy, but no one wants to eat it either way
It’s Kölln Zuberfleks Honig! The rough translation on that one is Honey Flavored Magic “Fleks”, which happen to be a flower shaped corn and oat nugget that tastes similar to Cap’n Crunch but with a lot less sugar.

As our friend Creature explains, Kölln Zuberfleks Honig is a cereal based on an educational kids show called “Die Sendung mit der Maus” (“The Show with the Mouse”) which follows the daily life adventures of a mouse and his elephant friend, and has been on television for over 40 years.

NYCWD is freaked out by this mouse mask, but Poppy finds it charming.

And now for some nutrition information! Per 30 gram serving there are: 167 calories, 5 grams protein, 29 grams of total carbohydrates, 12 grams sugar, 3 grams fat, 4 mg cholesterol, allllmost 1 gram of fiber, 150 mg sodium, 20% daily phosphorus, and 9% daily magnesium.

The ingredients list is super short, so let’s list them all! Corn flour, oat flour, sugar, wheat starch, glucose syrup, honey, unhydrogenated vegetable fat, iodized salt, soy lecithin, and carotene for color.

Poppy deducted a bowl for the low nutritional value, while NYCWD deducted for the mask on the back, because he can.

Kashi Pumpkin Spice Flax granola bars are part of the TLC line of products. These Tasty Little Crunchies are very tasty. They taste like the spices of a pumpkin pie. Oddly, they don’t really actually taste like pumpkin at all. Also, they’re extremely dry. I adore dry foods, for some strange reason, but this one was so dry that I almost had to pour myself a glass of water to get it down my gullet. Also, the box shows lots of luscious looking pumpkin seeds, but I couldn’t really find any, except a halved seed embedded deep into the layers of the bars. I found the flax seeds right away! Thanks, Kashi! Love my flax!

Nutritionwise, Kashi Pumpkin Spice Flax doesn’t have added vitamins or minerals and is high on fat content at 6 grams per 2 bars (one foil package), but the protein and fiber contents are also high, as is the whole grain carb count, so that’s pretty fantastic news. The first ingredient listed:

Whole grain oats! And then the grain blend that Kashi is known for shows up in the list as well.

Overall, a tasty product that forgets to deliver on the pumpkin, is a bit too dry, and isn’t high on vitamins and minerals but is high on protein, whole grains, and fiber. Solid.

Thanks, Kashi! Love my flax!

Nutritionwise, Kashi Pumpkin Spice Flax doesn't have added vitamins or minerals and is high on fat content at 6 grams per 2 bars (one foil package), but the protein and fiber contents are also high, as is the whole grain carb count, so that's pretty fantastic news. The first ingredient listed:

Whole grain oats! And then the grain blend that Kashi is known for shows up in the list as well.

Overall, a tasty product that forgets to deliver on the pumpkin, is a bit too dry, and isn't high on vitamins and minerals but is high on protein, whole grains, and fiber. Solid.

Kashi GOLEAN Crisp! Toasted Berry Crumble is a new flavor in the Kashi family. It packs cranberries and wild blueberries in with delicious and nutritious whole grains, including oats, sesame, red wheat, rye, brown rice, triticale, barley, and buckwheat.

Also of note, Kashi Toasted Berry Crumble includes 18 whole grain grams per serving, 9 grams or protein per serving, and 8 grams of fiber per serving! These are all wonderful words to our eyes. The rest of the nutrition information, for your viewing pleasure:

Kashi Toasted Berry Crumble maintains a deliciously natural sweet berry taste (with the help of a little cane sugar) while keeping the grains tasting natural instead of sugar-coated. This is like eating a cranberry/blueberry crisp, as the name implies. It could definitely be your morning cereal or your healthy dessert after dinner!
