Malt-o-Meal Blueberry Muffin Tops

Today we are finally reviewing a cereal that was handed to us in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Saturday, October 24, 2009 for the purposes of review on this here website. We’re pretty sure our friend Mew had no intention of us waiting until April 14, 2010 to share with the world what we think of this cereal, but that’s part of our charm. And it makes for one of the most entertaining Cereal Wednesday episodes we’ve done in quite a long time. Here goes…

Malt-o-Meal Blueberry Muffin Tops cereal is a wheat and rice based cereal with the taste of real blueberries. There are no blueberry pieces inside the bag (yes, no box for this, just a ZIP-PAK Pour Fresh resealable bag to preserve freshness) but the flavor of the bluebbery is quite strong.

It wasn’t quite as long a time between the expiration date and cereal consumption as the time when NYCWD ate Christmas Crunch several years after it was packaged, but we were a little concerned about eating Blueberry Muffin Tops that were 8 months past the Best If Used By date. Just for curiosity’s sake we perused the Malt-o-Meal FAQ and found this information:

Best If Used By - Blueberry Muffin Tops Q: Is it safe to eat your cereal when it has passed its ‘Best If Used By’ date?

A: Yes, it is safe, but since flavor will change as the product ages, we recommend that you purchase a new package.

Since we didn’t die from eating this expired cereal we can kinda vouch for this, but we do recommend that you listen to the advice of purchasing a new package if you find yours to be expired.

Nutrition information comes from Malt-o-Meal directly:

It’s not the most nutrition-packed cereal we’ve ever reviewed, but WOW does it taste like a blueberry muffin! How do they DO that?!

Taste: Blueberry muffin!
Box opening: No box! But the bag was a little tough to open.
Bag rippage: None!
Bag slippage: Nothing for it to slip from :)
Sog factor: Sogged out a little bit so that it had a slightly slimy coating that was unpleasant to the tongue
Allergy alert: Contains wheat, milk, and soy ingredients

    Woo, complete team of hosts!

After hearing about the expiration date, I sort of expected a swarm of angry bats to fly out of the bag. It does seem like a pretty good cereal, considering the generally-positive impression even in it’s de-facto post-mortem state.

  2. I love the way every time the cereal bags shake in your reviews, a cat comes running out. LOL

I also love the way you two make each other laugh. Precious.
