Porridge

What is there for me to say about the cereal of choice for Goldilocks and those pesky Three Bears? There really isn’t that much except that it was pretty damn good with some raisins and brown sugar. Now why don’t they mention THAT in the kid’s story??? It’s always too hot or too cold or just right. You never hear about it being too bland or too sweet or too plump with raisins. Trying to keep it simple with kids is not necessarily wise… opening their minds to possibilities is what books like this should be doing.

The truth is that this “porridge” tasted more like oatmeal. Now normally porridge is made of crushed oats as opposed to actual oatmeal, but it’s still acceptable according to Wikipedia. So if Wikipedia says its okay, then it must be, right? Sure. So this “porridge” was good mixed with about a tablespoon of brown sugar and two tablespoons of raisins. You can put any variety of fruit or nuts into the porridge to liven it up, but in the end its still going to have that oat base taste.

  1. I love it! I have a bowl of oatmeal every day for breakfast, every day. I know that’s not exactly porridge but you know….

I look forward to it daily, I can’t get enough of it. I don’t normally care for how it’s cooked in hotels and restaurants though.

Bear Silber– To be completely honest… I hated oatmeal as a kid. My mom would hard boil it and add milk to make this gross substance that tasted more like paste than oats. Nothing else was permitted to be added.

However… as an adult… I learned that not only can I eat what I want… but how I want it. So oatmeal with brown sugar and raisins is awesome in my tastebuds. I really grew fond of the flavored oatmeal as well… but that’ll be for a different Wednesday.

Brandon– It’s amazing what happens when you do these impromptu things in the wild. Had I actually put any thought into it… I would have force fed Mike a bowl as well… and maybe gotten a Klingon or a Vulcan in on it. Yeah… there was a Star Trek Convention there that weekend. Go figure.

  4. By the third bite you were no longer burning your mouth.

That is information I, as a potential porridge eater, can use. (Really, the way you delivered the line cracked me up for some reason.)

I eat oatmeal almost every day. I put a little bit of strawberry jam in on mine.
