Life: Maple & Brown Sugar

Life: Maple and Brown Sugar from Cereal Wednesday on Vimeo.

Today a very special guest joins NYCWD for cereal at the airport – none other than Poppy’s Mom! Also worth a mention is the cameo appearance by Poppy’s legs when she shakily pans down to give you a closer look at the cereal.

Quaker Life Maple & Brown Sugar is a new flavor of Life, although not a new flavor to the Quaker line. The Quaker Oats company was founded in 1901 and its famous (at least in New England) Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal has been around for NYCWD and Poppy’s entire lives, but the Life version was just introduced in 2008.

Life Maple & Brown Sugar is made with whole grain oats and is saturated fat free and cholesterol free, qualifying it as one of PepsiCo’s 250 Smart Choices Made Easy products. Per 3/4 cup serving this cereal packs 120 calories, 1.5 grams total fat, 2 gram of dietary fiber, 3 grams of protein, and some pretty high vitamin and mineral counts: 25% Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, and Zinc; 50% Iron; and 100% Folic Acid.

Poppy’s Mom is quite partial to maple and brown sugar, so it’s no surprise she enjoyed this quite a bit. The taste was subtle, not too overpowering, but not so weak that the flavor was too vague to guess in a blindfold taste test. Unfortunately, the cereal sogged out quickly and the flavor of the cereal sogged out with it to the bottom of the bowl. But, soggy oat cereal is technically oatmeal, so just drink some of the milk out and you’ve got the cold version of an old favorite! (Bright side, bright side…)

If you enjoy maple and brown sugar hot oatmeal you’ll enjoy the cold cereal version.

Taste: Sweet, maple-y, sugary goodness
Box opening: Very easy
Bag rippage: No ripping
Bag slippage: No slipping
Sog factor: High – quick to sog out, turns pretty mushy
Allergy alert: Contains wheat ingredients

  1. Hi Poppy’s Mom!!!

  2. Your mom’s a trooper – she meets Dawg for the first time and then gets made famous on the Internet!

  3. Awesome edition. Congrats to Poppy’s mom for being featured on Cereal Wednesday (if you’re ever in the Bay Area I’d give anything to be on an episode).

I never knew Life had a Maple and Brown Sugar version. I have to try it. I love Cinnamon Life and Plain Life and I love Maple and Brown Sugar so I’ve GOT to try the combination. I’m glad you two enjoyed it.

  5. I like Maple and I like Brown Sugar. But I don’t know if they really go together in Life cereal. Life is one of my favorite for a late night snack (there’s still some cereals that beat it, like Lucky Charms).

I may have to try this flavor when I run out of the 6 other cereals I have now.

  6. Poppy and her mom look so much alike. Loved this edition of CW, even though the music was quite annoying.

  7. Britt, in my best mom voice “hi, Britt!” I know she read this post, but I guess she’s shy about leaving a comment. 😉

Avi, she really is. Kinda reminds me of my October experience at The Other Airport.

Bear Silber, it’s a brand new flavor. And, currently no plans for the CW crew to go west, but if we do we’ll let you know. :)

MM, which goes to show we’re serious about the one take rule. I brought one box of cereal to the airport, whatever happened was going up on this site. 😉

Marty, *gasp* have you ever had Quaker maple and brown sugar oatmeal?! It was my favorite growing up! It’s just as good in Life form.

Abbagirl, TRUST ME, I “asked” Dawg to scout out a quieter location, but one could not be located on that side of the security checkpoint. That music was even more annoying in person.

I had a wonderful time meeting Dawg and being a guest on Cereal Wednesday.

Thank you all for you comments

  9. Hi, Mom! ((HUG))

    Hi, Sue! RAWR! *giggle*

  10. Never have liked Life (never thought I should eat it just because Mickey would; what if Mickey liked broccoli too?). Anyway, Quaker Maple and Brown Sugar oatmeal is super excellent! Good vid for cereal Wednesday as always.
