Almost a year after Kraft Foods started to look to get rid of Post Cereals due to cost and profit loss, coupled with the decision to stop advertising sugary cereal, we still find Golden Crisp with its mascot Sugar Bear alive and well on the shelves.
Golden Crisp was introduced by Post Cereals in 1949, under the name Sugar Crisp. The name has undergone a number of changes from the original, to Super Sugar Crisp, to Super Golden Crisp, to the current incarnation of just Golden Crisp. The dropping of the word Sugar represents the change in the mentality of America towards a lifestyle where Sugar is viewed as Satan incarnate.
Image by JasonLiebig via FlickrThe cereal itself is a puffed wheat… and while it isn’t necessarily my favorite kind, I can definitely overlook this thanks to… yeah… you guessed it… the sugar! To be honest, the cereal smells sweet… and the obnoxious wheat is 90% covered by the sweetened coating. The only real wheat indicator is a slight aftertaste. However, the cereal does sog out incredibly quickly as the coating dissolves into the milk.
While the Box and Bag Opening went well, the Pour was a good solid one with little to no Bag Slippage, and the taste is definitely palatable (unless you’re a diabetic), I would still have to only give this cereal 3 Bowls for both the Sog Factor and the lack of a true Cereal Premium (Toy). Still, I’m going to give it 4 Bowls for the simple fact that Sugar Bear is still on the box… and his sweatshirt even says Sugar Bear on it.
At least Post Cereals is keeping it real and sweet with Golden Crisp.

Greeneyezzs last blog post..Hey you??
Ya know, I’m kinda wonderin’….you do this every Wednesday, which means you open a *new* box of cereal *every* week.
Do you actually go through a box a week? (I’m thinkin’ you’d have a lot of opened boxes of cereal!)
Come now, ‘fess up…whatcha doin’ with all that cereal???

I loooooved this cereal as a kid. No idea why, but I love puffed wheat cereal in general. Maybe because Mom made me eat really healthy stuff when I was very young?
And, your tirade… priceless. Seriously priceless. I <3 when you get heated during CW.
It’s still called Sugar-Crisp here in Canada.

My Mom let me eat sugared cereal when I was a kid and I did not like this one because it always sogged before I could finish.
I miss the toys too
Gramma let you eat sugared cereal?! I am soooo gonna ask her about that the next time I see her!
Sugar Bear is bad-ass. There’s just no getting around it. I am secretly hoping for a Cereal Deathmatch between Cuckoo Puff Bird and Sugar Bear because I want to see him bring on the pain!

Love the Super Sugar Crisp. That’s what I’ll always call it no matter what they do.
And I’m with you…more TOYS!

all i have in the kitchen is apple jacks and i am so craving sugar crisps (ha, i accidentally typed sugar crips, like a little gang or something).
love your cereal wednesdays, but i am way too impressionable. between craving the puffed wheat goodness, i am also singing the cereal and milk song.
how wrong is it of a grown woman to wanna sit next to that adorable little girl and eat cereal with her? don’t answer that.

Confession - I sing the song also. I have caught myself singing the song when I am at work, walking down the cereal aisle of one my stores. I can’t help myself.
I hate the sog in this cereal, but the first taste is always the best. I ate this when I was growing up.
What was the annoying beeping in the background? I kept checking my house cuz’ I thought it was coming from here.
Love that you were here this Wednesday! Made my week!

Abbagirl74 it’s Dawg’s cell phone text alert notification. And guess what I’m listening to in the background right now?
You get used to it after a while, but as a special request for you we’ll throw the phone out the window (ok, ok, maybe put it on vibrate) during filming.

Greeneyezz- Huggy Bear wishes he was as cool as Sugar Bear. As for what happens to the cereal… most of it gets eaten… or donated to my brother’s pantry of wonder.
Poppy- Well I do get heated… and grumpy… especially when there are no toys involved.
Lazylikewally- Luckily Canada is not full of fascist tyrants like her in America… where the cereal companies have been transformed into public enemy #1.
Bobbird3131- The sog factor of this cereal is definitely holding it back from breakfast greatness.
Dave2- I totally agree… in fact whenever I see Sugar Bear on TV or in the store… the theme to Shaft plays in my head. He’s a badd bear…
Karl- I’m just glad that they didn’t change Sugar Bear’s name into something stupid… like Crisp Bear or something.
Hellohahanarf- The song is pretty catchy… in fact I usually sing it while in the aisle at the store. As for the girl… well believe it or not through the magic of Green Screen you probably could… she is an iStock Photo special.
Abbagirl74- Sadly… that beeping is my job. It goes off 24/7. More sadly… I totally forgot to put it on vibrate before starting the camera… and in case you didn’t know… Cereal Wednesday’s are one take kind of shows… especially since there is only one box.
I also agree… I’m not a fan of quick to sog cereals… and this happens to be one.
Quick sog cereals are not nice. But I ate my share of Super Sugar Crisp back in the day. At least they kept the mascot’s name the same over the years of changes with the cereal’s name.
