Quisp Cereal

Originally released in 1966with similarly formulated Quake Cereal, Quisp Cereal was made by the Quaker Oats Company. Quisp is a saucer shaped corn puffed cereal, that is sugar coated and with an extremely similar taste to another popular Quaker cereal… Cap’n Crunch. The big difference between Quisp and Cap’n Crunch is that Quisp has a softer texture, and therefore does not damage the roof of your mouth to the extent that the Cap’n does. The only reported difference between Quisp and Quake was in the shape of the cereal bit. Quisp is shaped like a saucer and Quake was shaped like a metal gear.

Both Quisp and Quake were not only released at the same time, but they were advertised together. In 1972 a contest was held between the two cereals that resulted in Quisp winning and remaining on the store shelves… while Quake was buried in the annals of history.

Due to low sales, Quisp was pulled off the market in the late 70’s. It made a brief comeback in the 80’s, and then evolved in the 90’s as the world’s first “Internet Cereal” that was available only online for ordering. The continuation of Quisp in such a limited distribution network proves that cereal marketing has an impact on the products that people purchase, even if it is not stocked in the actual store.

While the cereal is a good tasting cereal, the fact the box ripped so easily and the bag opened with such difficulty… this cereal has only received a 2 Bowls recommendation.

I don’t remember that cereal at all.

That’s a rare one. I saw it once in a grocery about a year ago and regret that I didn’t pick it up. Sounds just like Cap’n Crunch, which is “just ok” imo, so maybe I didn’t miss much. The box is still so retro cool and the ads for it make it so enticing. But $12 plus is just too much.

      Never heard of it. Weird.

I think I paid $14 and change but this is for science…and possible residuals so it’s all good.

It doesn’t surprise me that nobody has heard of it. If you were born after 1982, (raised in the 80’s) it was already a goner.

I still think Quake was better and I’m telling ya, I remember vividly that it tasted different from Quisp. It did.

Now if I could only find my all time favourite, Rice Kringles. That would probably be considered a racist cereal now though.

I was born much before 1982, but I think the only cereal we ever had in my house growing up was Honey Nut Cheerios. :) (Which would please The Steff. ;)

…never heard of it?! Reminds me of Quakers King Vitamin growing up.

Avi- Further evidence that your a young whippersnapper.

OzThomas- The formula is pretty much the same, except the texture of the bit is quite different. The price is a bit mind-numbing once you work in the shipping and handling.

Poppy- You were not born TOO much before 1982, which makes me wonder what it was that you ate before 1979 when HNC was introduced???

Miss Ann- I know… I can only assume that Quake tasted similiar… but unless someone has a box hidden since the 70’s… the world will never know. Residuals appear to be on track… your first dollar should be there by 2011.

Sxymom- Is the fact that Quisp, Quake, and King Vitaman are all Quaker cereals lost on anyone? Maybe they should stick to oatmeal.

Cheerios. I ate Cheerios before 1979. With butter. I kid you not.

    9. GravatarComment by NYC Watchdog on December 12, 2007 8:18 pm

I was fine with the Cheerios.

You mad me gasp with the butter.

      Was it salted?

I will not dignify that with a response!

      (Unsalted butter… BLECH.)

      Wow.

Talk about neutralizing the lowering cholesterol effect Cheerios has.

You’re a wild and crazy person.

Sometimes I would have salted oatmeal with butter, it’s a traditional breakfast in Europe, so maybe salted Cheerios isn’t so strange.

      I’m semi-European. I’m English. :)

And, until you’ve had butter on Cheerios I recommend not knocking it. It’s delish. (Also goes well on Corn Flakes.)

Oz- I would always have salted butter with both my oatmeal and my spinach pastina… but both are hot cereals.

Poppy- You almost had me… until you brought up the Corn Flakes. That just proves it is the devil’s food!

Does it make a difference if I tell you that you put the butter on top of the cereal then microwave it so that the butter seeps into every pore of the cereal and THEN you eat it, hot?

    16. GravatarComment by NYC Watchdog on December 13, 2007 10:48 am

Uh… YES! That makes a huge difference!!!

Here I am thinking your spreading the butter on your cereal like its a roll or something. That makes alot more sense to me now.

      Mmmmm, hot buttery goodness.

I intentionally left that detail out until everyone was sufficiently horrified. :) (It’s what I do.)
