Cereal Wednesday Episode XXVI: Krusty O’s Cereal
For anyone who doubted the validity of The Simpsons as a representation of the current state of America, well the fact that there is now indeed a physical manifestation of Krusty O’s Cereal is concrete evidence that they’re pretty darn close. The cereal itself is in fact a true knock off of the more commercially recognized Kellogg’s Froot Loops. The unique packaging of the cereal, including an illustration of a bowl full of worms, screws, wood, and the “Rusty Krusty Metal Oh” is not a true illustration of the contents.
The Simpsons marketing machine should not be taken lightly. The fact is that since the series debuted as its own show in 1989, it has become a billion dollar merchandising machine. There have been Simpsons Monopoly, Simpsons comics, Simpsons video games, Simpsons music, Simpsons art, and of course The Simpsons Seasonal DVD sets. Besides the exclusive 7-11 store merchandise, you can also look forward to The Simpsons Ride opening at Universal Studios locations in Florida and California. The fact that they have released this limited edition cereal packaging is really just a drop in the bucket for them.
The real winners in this is 7-11 and Malt-O-Meal. The fact is that they have really not been able to keep the cereal on the shelves. It is quite possibly one of the best marketing plans seen in years, and yet it is a simple concept of taking cartoon based products and providing them with physical manifestations. Malt-O-Meal, for the first time in their history, is able to price their product as a premium cereal instead of an imitation. This may also garner them some regular eaters as well, although their name does not appear on the box. The price markups being seen over at E-Bay are a prime example of the dedication of fans and the power of The Simpsons brand. Personally, I’m waiting for them to produce the Harry Potter cereals.
So with the release of The Simpsons Movie, which by the way is an ode to the old style of animation using hand drawing animators and not computer generators, don’t expect Simpsonsmania to blow over anytime soon… I just wouldn’t go buying stock in the Krusty Korporation.
I never got my Rusty Krusty Metal Oh. Damn false advertising.
In the video I mistakenly identified Minneapolis as being in the state of Michigan. In reality it is in the state of Minnesota. It would have probably been better if they would have been in Michigan so that at least then Minneapolisians would have a chance at getting some Krusty O’s

First comment bitches. Nice review there. I do miss the older higher adrenaline, action packed intro and outro…but this will do for the time. I am waiting for you use LL Cool J’s Milky Cereal song on one of the shows. That would be great.
July 18th, 2007 at 2:21 am
Ohhhh!!! I want to win! What fun!
I can’t believe they actually made that cereal. Pretty funny, even has the jagged metal oh. Too bad it’s a dirty marketing ploy.
Stinkin’ Simpsons normally make fun of that nonsense. On the other hand, Simpsons have come out with tons of crappy toys/games just like Krusty did. Those Simpsons video games SUCKED.
Great video!
July 18th, 2007 at 2:37 am
Great Episode! The opening of the bag was SO crisp sounding, that my dog lifted her head, sniffed the air to see if actual food was being opened in her presence and then snuffed in disgust when she realized there were no snacks to be had. Classic!
July 18th, 2007 at 2:44 am
OMG, you went to Jersey? That sucks, dude. Are you sure the cereal is safe? I mean, you know, is it glowing or anything…’cuz Jersey…yeah.
And the Blogography, tee! FWEEE! I’m wearing my “Try Evil” one tonight. Makes my tits look big. *cough*
Anyway, lovely review…as usual, my dear. These always make me hungry for cereal even though I don’t really EAT cereal (except granola in yogurt.) I think all we have in the cupboard is Weatabix.
Grody.
July 18th, 2007 at 3:19 am
very educational……. i’m eating a bowl right now…… i bought a new vintage toni the tiger one just to celebrate tomorrow morning……thank you cereal wed.
July 18th, 2007 at 4:18 am
Great to see the return of Cereal Wednesday, just as entertaining as ever. Nice to see the really long intro moved to the end. You really should do oreo-o’s soon, or perhaps foreign cereals (I could send some European cereals if you like)or other breakfast-y things, like Pop-Tarts.
Keep up the good work!
July 18th, 2007 at 8:28 am
The 7-11 near me has shelves full of the cereal. I’m wondering if I should go buy some to sell on eBay now. I tried the pink frosted donut - it was good. And I’ve got a case of Buzz cola in the fridge right now.
I have one box, but I’m considering opening it from the bottom, taking the bag out, eating it, and just keeping the box as a collectible.
July 18th, 2007 at 9:02 am
I agree with you on the fact that it was a great marketing ploy.
I myself would have loved to have seen one of the 7-11’s just for the fun of it. But I live out in the middle of the desert to far from anywhere. lol
I do love your cereal Wednesday videos. You have a great concept with this and they are enjoyable. I even get my husband to watch them with me.
One cereal my grandmother was always eating when I was a kid was FiberOne. I hate that stuff and would love to see you do a review on it. lol
July 18th, 2007 at 11:25 am
I”m a huge fan of the Simpsons. However, I will not battle a mad mob to get any of their merchandise. I guess you could say I”m a huge, LAZY fan of the Simpsons…lol.
Love your Youtube channel. I”ve been a subscriber for quite some time now. I didn’t even realize you had a website until now. Very cool. Glad to see you back. Every Wednesday, me and my fiance would both sit down with a bowl of cereal and watch your newest vid. It became kind of a tradition with us. She”ll be very happy to find out you’re back…as am I.
July 18th, 2007 at 11:39 am
I thought I left a comment, but who knows? I’m always doing something ditzy. Anyway, I wanna’ chance to win a box of Krusty-O’s. Your Li’l Dave shirt looks great on you BTW! Once again, I love Cereal Wednesdays!
July 18th, 2007 at 11:40 am
I want my birthday present!!!!!
July 18th, 2007 at 11:46 am
Your exposé of Krusty O’s is worthy of “60 Minutes.” Or at least a mention on “Dateline NBC.”
July 18th, 2007 at 1:24 pm
Well, Krusty-O’s may be a marketing rip-off, but this has got to be the best-dressed Cereal Wednesday ever!
July 18th, 2007 at 4:12 pm
hey, this should be cool.
July 18th, 2007 at 6:58 pm
I’m all about the Krusty-O’s! I doubt I could find any this side of LA anyway. Throw my name in the pool for a box!
July 18th, 2007 at 7:43 pm
I want some Krusty O’s too!!!
July 18th, 2007 at 7:56 pm
As a huge fan of both cereal and The Simpsons, Cereal Wednesday rocks!
July 18th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
Oh, count me in! I wanna win one! And I can’t get your “Cereal and Milk” song out of my head, still…but that’s a good thing because I really like it.
July 19th, 2007 at 12:20 am
I heard that Apu went through all the Krusty O cereal boxes and swiped the jagged metal O’s … it seems his wife, Manjula, needs some new “Bindis” (forehead decoration). Doh!
July 19th, 2007 at 5:16 am
Hmmm… Like the song… What happened to the underage asian girls?
I’ll abstain from the contest, can get my own box, not that I’m that inclined… only a buck for the other one huh?
Actually this was one of the most entertaining episodes yet… the ‘you promised me’ was great mein kapitan. I think perhaps a Seinfeld based episode should be in the future plans… then again that’s a lot of cereal… I’ll play Elaine if you need me to.
Stay safe bro!
-bill A is for Apple J is for Jacks!
July 19th, 2007 at 7:44 am
Dammit, now I’m gonna have to bust open my box of Krusty-O’s and eat them.
July 19th, 2007 at 9:43 am
I don’t think I could eat anything with “crusty” in the title.
July 19th, 2007 at 1:32 pm
I have to agree with Dave, you are looking rather dapper there. I wonder who makes the Buzz Cola? Also, I wouldn’t have minded if they’d done some Duff Beer, with Duff Man on the label. That would have ROCKED.
July 20th, 2007 at 12:23 am
I didn’t realise they were making KrustyO’s! Yes I know, “duh” lol
July 21st, 2007 at 4:27 am
well i try to go buy some krusty o’s in my seven eleven but all sold out, i noticed that i think they also did the same thing for the buzz cola it was just another brand
July 22nd, 2007 at 11:29 am
Oooh, I’d love a box. I read about the Kwik-E-Marts on CNN and thought it would be awesome to go to one, then I found out one of the tweleve was within 30 miles from my house.

July 23rd, 2007 at 9:05 pm
Sooo disappointed that there is no jagged metal O. When and if I get my box I will need to then get some Buzz to wash it down with.

i stopped by the kwik-e mart 5 minutes from my house on venice blvd (los angeles) out of curiosity. was surprised to find it full wall-to-wall of people and kids. somehow i mistakenly thought it would be more underground but it was a sickening madhouse with people screaming in excitement and taking pictures. the simpsons stuff flying off the shelves. it totally bummed me out.
July 25th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

July 26th, 2007 at 2:29 am
Nice video! Very funny and informative. Please send me a box of Krusty-Os with a jagged metal Krusty-O. Thanks.
July 26th, 2007 at 6:58 am
I really enjoyed your infromational disseration on the pimping of MaltOmeal cereal into KrustyOs. I tend to agree with you that it is a silly marketing ploy and it just goes to show that Hollywood will do anything to promote a movie, this has to be one of the biggest product tyeins that i have ever seen marketed. Regardless i agree with you that if it advertises that you are suppoed to get a free jagged metal “O” that they include a FREE JAGGED METAL O for crying out loud.
I have viewed your other cereal reviews and found them to be very entertaining, Kudos keep up the eating. I would like to suggest that you start doing some of the TOP SHELF cereals like Musli or those hippy Oat and Dates with Almond Slivers type of Cereals, please.
July 26th, 2007 at 2:17 pm

July 26th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
Hey…saw your video on “Yahoo Videos” first I ever heard of ” CerealWednesday.com”! You have a very informative site. I love the KrustyO’s segment. My husband and daughter are BIG simposn’s fans (not me)and I would love to win a box of KrustyO’s for them. We do not have a 7Eleven anywhere near my town.
Even if I don’t win I will still be a fan of your site because it is so informative for me and my family.
Thanks and enjoy your show and will tell others about it!
Connie
July 26th, 2007 at 8:23 pm
I would like to win one of those boxes!!
i am a huge simpsons fan and im def. gonna see the movie..duh!!..who isnt?!?!?
July 27th, 2007 at 5:14 am
well hello there you don’t now me but have seen your face on the krusty o’s that was great!!!! Iwould love to say that it is true that the krusty o’s were picked up from the tootie frutties which were picked up from the fruit loops so basicly the krusty o’s episode was that when bart got the krusty o’s he almost died when he took a bite of the cereal which he had accedently swallowed the wrong thing and had pendasidis problems because of the swallowing of the jagged metal O then krusty got sued but when he was in court he said that nothing had been wrong with the cereal until he tries it then he faints. so that’s what happened!!!
July 27th, 2007 at 5:21 am
hope i get the cereal!!!!!!!!!
July 27th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
well, what can i say. you took the words right out of my mouth and i kind of love you for that. I am a hard core simpson fan but with all the comercialism going around i feel like “the simpsons” is starting to loose its sincerity as a heart warming show and now is trying to suck you-the average american- into buying products that are featured into the show.
July 27th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Very entertaining show! I`m a big fan of the Simpsons from Germany, so I tried to get Krusty O`s via e-bay. But not only did most of the sellers want something like 20$ for the item itself; they also wanted up to 68 $ (!) for the shipping. I could propably afford that if I don`t eat anything else this month… - Anyways, there is still the chance to win in your contest; so thanks for keeping my hopes up! (And, by the way: should I win, I could gladly pay for the real shipping cost to Europe, if necessary - or to send you some funny German cereal in exchange…).
July 27th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
